The river banks within the city limits appear to have been left unfortified, although they were fortified along the Campus Martius. The walls enclosed all the seven hills of Rome plus the Campus Martius and, on the right bank of the Tiber, the Trastevere district. They superseded the earlier Servian Wall built during the 4th century BC. In the words of roman writer Ammianus: " But when he came to the Forum of Trajan, a construction unique under the heavens, as we believe, and admirable even in the unanimous opinion of the gods, he stood fast in amazement, turning his attention to the gigantic complex about him, beggaring description and never again to be imitated by mortal men.The Aurelian Walls ( Italian: Mura aureliane) are a line of city walls built between 271 AD and 275 AD in Rome, Italy, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Aurelian. It was said to be the most beautiful building in Rome. The large white building on the right is Trajan's Market, the world's first covered mall. On opposite sides of the Column (not visible here) are 2 libraries (1 in Greek, 1 in Latin) and behind the Column (also not visible here) stands the Temple of Trajan, built after he died. Behind it rises Trajan's Column, a victory monument after the emperor conquered Dacia (modern day Romania). The large building at the end of the plaze is the Basilica Ulpia, the largest courthouse in the world at the time. In the middle of the plaza stands a statue of the emperor himself, riding a chariot. Some info (for the people that are interested): The Forum of Trajan was the final and largest forum built in Rome and designed by Apollodorus of Damascus. (#spoiler) = neat!
